“You think of someone in such a vulnerable state and so confused about where they are and what’s happening to them, and we try to say that that is the same as a broken leg. That is so much more complicated than something purely physical. We need to give it even more attention.”
On episode 37 of Off the Cuff with Danny LoPriore, Danny sat down with Depression to Expression founder, educator, mental health advocate, coach, and keynote speaker Scott Ste Marie. In this episode, they discuss Scott’s experiences with depression and anxiety, how those led him to where he is today, and why mental health resources need to be readily available globally, specifically in Canada, where he currently lives.
“You think of someone in such a vulnerable state and so confused about where they are and what’s happening to them, and we try to say that that is the same as a broken leg. That is so much more complicated than something purely physical. We need to give it even more attention.” (12:40)
Scott unpacks Canada’s mental health system and why they still have a long way to go regarding accessibility. He also touches on the importance of trusting your intuition when it comes to mental health. We’re constantly inundated with information through in-person interactions or social media, so he stresses the importance of choosing the route, medication, therapist, etc., that is best for YOU.
“With mental health especially, everyone else needs to shut the fuck up… Fuck everyone, and do what’s best for you.” (20:30)
Finally, he shares the inception and creation of Depression to Expression, what his work as a speaker and coach has taught him about how to help others, and the importance of solidifying a social circle filled with people that truly know, love, and support you.
“I call those fringe friends. You know in golf you have the green and then the fringe? Who is on your green? And then there’s so many more people on the fringe, and then there’s so many in the rough that you’ll speak to every ten years. But who is on the green with you like making it happen?” (57:12)
